Findus – eneren i den hvide storks verden

Findus, der stammer fra en rede i Broderup i Sønderjylland, var en af fire søskende, der rejste mod syd i august 2021. På ryggen havde han og søsteren Simba en lille GPS-sender, som gjorde det muligt for hele verden at følge ham og Simba på deres rejse. Starten på rejsen var ikke uden dramatik, og kun én dag efter at have forladt den hyggelige og trygge rede i Broderup blev Findus angrebet af en rovfugl - højst sandsynligt en havørn. Han blev fundet og anbragt på en plejestation for tilskadekomne dyr, hvorefter han blev sat fri efter et par dages pleje og hurtigt indhentede Simba. I 2021 tilbragte både Findus og Simba vinteren i Spanien.

I 2022 vendte de begge tilbage mod nord og tilbragte det meste af sommeren i de nordlige dele af Tyskland og i Danmark, men da det blev tid til at trække mod syd, skiltes deres veje. Findus trak mod øst og sluttede sig sandsynligvis til en gruppe hvide storke på vej til Centralafrika, mens Simba vendte tilbage til Spanien. Allerede ved at vælge den alternative østgående rute vidste vi, at Findus var en speciel fugl.

Alle forventede, at Findus ville flyve tilbage til Europa ad samme rute. Men Findus ville prøve noget nyt og rejste direkte i nordvestlig retning mod Gibraltar.

Findus gennemførte en usædvanlig flyvning over 23 lande og passerede Europa, Mellemøsten samt flere lande i Afrika. Han vendte sikkert tilbage til Europa i sommeren 2023 og tilbragte det meste af sommeren i Frankrig.

Findus gennemførte en rejse, som ingen anden hvid stork har vist sig at være i stand til at gennemføre.

At følge hans ekstraordinære rejse og bevise hans enestående præstation er kun muliggjort på grund af vores GPS tracking projekt. Uden investeringen i GPS-trackere ville vi aldrig have vidst, at en sådan rejse var mulig.

Findus - one of a kind in the world of the White Stork

Originating from a nest in the southernmost parts of Jutland in Denmark, Findus was one of four siblings departing for south in August 2021. On his bag, a small GPS transmitter was attached, which allowed the whole world to follow him and his sister Simba on their journey. The start of the journey proved to be quite troubling and only one day after leaving the cozy and safe nest, Findus was attacked by a predator – most likely a Sea Eagle. He was recovered and placed at a recreation home for injured animals. He was released after a few days, and quickly caught up with Simba. In 2021 Findus and Simba spent the winter in Spain.

In 2022 they both returned north and spent most of the summer in the northernmost parts of Germany and Denmark. But when migration time arrived their ways parted. Findus went east, and probably joined a group of white storks destined for the Central Africa, while Simba returned to Spain. Already by choosing the alternate eastbound route, we knew, that Findus was a special bird.

Everyone expected Findus to fly back to Europe using the same route. But Findus wanted to try something new, and travelled directly in a northwestern direction towards Gibraltar.  

Findus completed  an unusual scenic flight over 23 countries, passing Europe, the Middle East and multiple countries in Africa. He returned safely to Europe in the summer of 2023 and spent most of the summer in France.

He completed a journey no other white stork have has proven to be able to accomplish.

To follow his extraordinary journey, and to prove his outstanding accomplishment, was only made possible due to the Danish GPS tracking project. Without the investment in GPS trackers, we would never have known, that such journey was possible.
